The movie "Contact" is one of my favorite movies. In the movie, Jodie Foster plays Eleanore "Ellie" Arroway. (My daughter was almost named Eleanore but that's another story.) During one scene, Ellie is using a short wave radio trying to find signals from outer space to prove that we are not alone in the universe. Ellie is making big turns on the dial and is frustrated that she's not hearing anything on the radio. Her father tells her "Small moves, Ellie. Small moves." As she turns the dial more slowly, she is thrilled when she finally picks up a signal.
What does this have to do with me? Well, for a long time now, I have thought I should keep a journal about what is happening in my life and with my family but when I think about it, those "big turns" seem too overwhelming. "Where do I start?" "Should it be handwritten?" "Should I do a blog?" "What should the blog look like?" "Will what I write be interesting?" "Will I have the time?" And so on...you get the picture.
So, in my effort to stop beating myself up about not doing it, I've decided to make my own "small moves" and just get started. No worrying about what it will look like, what it will say, or if I've picked just the right title. I guess all that will get worked out as I go and in the end I will at least be able to say, "Yes! I've been keeping a record of what is happening in my life." And no more beating myself up about it...Goal accomplished!
I love it already! :) This was a pretty big "small" move if you ask me!
