In keeping with my idea of enjoying the journey to our destination, we once again hit the road around 10am to head home from Lake Powell. Jeff decided we would take a little bit different way home just to change it up a bit. After taking a self guided tour of Glen Canyon Dam and driving for quite a while, we started going through a small town (can't even remember the name right now...Circleville, Utah...I think) and followed what we thought was this different way home. Well all of a sudden the paved road turned to dirt road. Jeff and I both looked at each other like "Ummm...is this really the way we are supposed to go?" There was a sign that indeed confirmed that if we followed this dirt road we would make it to where we wanted to go. So....for 35 miles we drove slowly on this dirt road in our 4-wheel drive truck...OH WAIT....make that our front wheel drive mini-van!!! Jack said the road was too bumpy for him and I was a bit nervous of what the road would be like because it had recently rained in the area. Anyway, this 35 mile stretch of dirt road couldn't have led to a more magnificent find! We saw gorgeous landscape and many deer, including a mama with her two babies. We passed by several beautiful, little lakes and stopped at a few of them to fish. It was a wonderful find and I'm so glad we slowed things down and took the time to follow that dirt road.....even if it meant we didn't get home until midnight...YAWN!!!

The kids kept wanting me to take their pictures while they were jumping off the rocks.
Notice Annie and Jack are wearing sweatshirts.
It was nice to have some cool mountain air after being in the heat of Lake Powell.
Jack looks to me like he might be yelling "ROCK ON!"
First deer we saw....somehow my lens got locked and I didn't get to zoom as far as I could.
Jeff fly fishing at the second lake we stopped at.
Notice the ripple of water on the right....fish were constantly jumping for bugs all over the lake.
Jeff snags his first fish.
All the kids exploring...they happened to find two dead fish. Thankfully they didn't pick them up.
Jeff going for the long cast.
Jack tried to hold the fish but it wiggled right out of his hand...
...and onto the ground.
Jeff safely recovered the fish...
...and released it back into the lake.
Another deer...
...babies...
...babies with their mama.
Of course Annie thought the babies were "ADOOOORABLE!"
(I think that's her favorite word right now.)
There are few things as cute (or adorable) as baby deer but I can think of one...Jack jumping of a rock with his tongue out with a "ROCK ON" face! :)
ReplyDeleteLove the photo of Jeff with the long cast & the reflection in the lake...stunning!
Amazing photos! I need to go here! And your 4th of july hike looked so great too. I am with you on that being the perfect temp.

Definitely worth taking "the road less traveled." Looks like you had a great time. We should get together with our families and go on a hike. All the kids would have a blast and maybe, just maybe, the adults could get to complete a sentence. Let's really try to plan it...I mean REALLY. By the way, you are a great photographer. You definitely have an eye for great photos. I'll let you be in charge of our family photos on the hike!!
